Upcoming Certification Deadlines, Release Dates, and Regulations

Ambitious new carbon regulations and sustainability advancements tend to seem far off in the future, but we are almost halfway to 2030, and big changes are starting to happen right now! Many third-party green building certifications are coming out with new, bold iterations. California is implementing new code requirements this summer. We love to see it, and we’re here to help you stay ahead of the curve by providing a summary of new updates, sunset dates, and state code advancements below.  

Green Globes Minimum Requirement Updates

What you need to know:

  • Green Building Initiative (GBI)’s updated requirements for Green Globes Certification will take effect for all projects registering for certification after July 1st, 2024.
  • Green Globes New Construction (NC) will sunset on June 30, 2024.
  • Per GBI, “The updated minimum requirements ensure robust standards and alignment with local and federal requirements while incentivizing building owners to strive towards GBI’s vision of sustainable, healthy, and resilient buildings for all”

California Embodied Carbon Regulation, AB 2446

What you need to know:

  • Starting on July 1st, 2024, all new commercial building projects over 100,000 square feet in size must reduce total embodied carbon by 10% below baseline.
  • All school projects that are 50,000 SF or larger must comply with above requirements as well.

California EV Charging Requirements

What you need to know:

  • Starting July 10th, 2024 all new hotel/motel and multifamily residential construction projects must install low power level 2 EV charging receptacles on 40% of parking spaces.

International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Programs

What you need to know:

  • June 30th, 2024 is the final day to register for LBC 4.0 and the Zero Carbon, Zero Energy, and Core 1.0 programs.
  • The updated Living Building Challenge® 4.1 (LBC), Zero Carbon CertificationTM 1.1 (ZC), and Zero Energy CertificationTM 1.1 (ZE) have been restructured to align energy and carbon requirements across the suite for added clarity and ease when aiming to target multiple certifications.
