Staff Spotlight: Maria Espinosa

By Jordan Klotzle

Verdical Group’s Staff Spotlight series highlights the incredible contributions that each of our team members make through their expertise. The series is also a great way to delve into what our team members do on a day-to-day basis to mitigate the climate crisis.

Meet Maria Espinosa, a Commissioning Manager I with Verdical Group! Maria joined the VG team in October 2022 from her previous role as a Commissioning Agent working with LEED projects throughout Mexico. Maria holds her LEED AP BD+C and ActiveScore AP credentials, as well as a degree in Sustainable Development Engineering from the Universidad del Valle de Mexico and a Master’s degree in Project Management from the European Open Business School.

As a Commissioning Manager, Maria helps to make the built environment greener by improving the energy efficiency of our clients’ projects through the commissioning process, whether for CALGreen Code mandated parameters, for a LEED certification prerequisite, or to meet a project’s unique individual needs. Commissioning activities take place throughout both the design and construction phases of a project to ensure that the systems are properly installed and are operating as designed, and in an energy efficient manner.

Maria’s daily activities depend upon what stage of design or construction each of our projects is working through. During the design phase, she may spend her time drafting the commissioning plan for a project, reviewing the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) document, or performing a design review or submittal review.

“Depending on the size of the project, submittal reviews can be quick, but sometimes it can also take a couple of days,” she explained.

During the construction phase, the real bulk of the commissioning work begins. This involves creating the prefunctional checklists, functional performance tests, system manuals, and final commissioning reports. Maria also conducts site visits to see our projects in-person, whether to perform functional performance testing or to resolve issues identified on a previous site visit. At the end of the commissioning process, the team is able to confidently hand over a project to the owner that is verified to be functioning correctly.

Maria’s work as a Commissioning Manager directly helps ensure that buildings are doing their part to help solve the climate crisis.

“We prevent issues that would waste energy, and we make sure that the building is controlled in an efficient way,” Maria shared. “For example, by reviewing submittals, we also ensure that the equipment is efficient. By doing this process, we are saving energy and money for the owners, as well as making sure that the building works properly and the project isn’t wasting energy.”

As someone who loves to be out in nature, Maria’s favorite type of project to work on is any high-rise building because of the unique views they offer. She recently had the chance to take in the breathtaking scenery from the 72nd floor of the iconic US Bank Tower, as Verdical Group completed LEED Fundamental and LEED Enhanced Commissioning services for the Los Angeles office of global engineering firm Walter P. Moore.

Maria’s favorite part of working at Verdical Group is being able to strive toward achieving the company’s mission of creating an equitable net zero future for all people.

“I fell in love with Verdical Group’s mission and values,” she explained. “I really enjoy our regular team meetups, and how we keep a human connection even though we’re working from home—plus, we are working to make a positive impact in the world. I’m really happy here.”
