Shula Talks Embodied Carbon with Marketplace
Verdical Group’s Founder & CEO Drew Shula was recently interviewed by Marketplace’s Caleigh Wells about California’s new embodied carbon regulations for buildings over 50,000 square feet. The interview aired on National Public Radio (NPR) on April 20, 2026.
Shula spoke from onsite at Verdical Group’s Malibu High School campus, where our team helped to ensure the building materials complied with sustainability requirements, including the roof, floor, steel, walls, paint and insulation.
As Shula mentions, the new requirements aren’t extremely difficult to meet, builders just haven’t had to think about them before. A builder can comply by doing one of three things:
Reuse at least 45% of an existing building.
Prove a project emits 10% less carbon thanks to, say, recycled steel or some longer-lasting concrete alternative.
Use building materials that each meet a lower global warming threshold.
