Los Angeles Valley College Community Services Center

Los Angeles Valley College Community Services Center (LAVC CSC) – Multipurpose Community Center is a one-story, 23,839-square-foot building executed by QDG Architecture and Pankow Builders. Verdical Group worked with the team to complete:

  • LEED Project Management (BD+C v3 Gold Certified)

The team worked together to achieve LEED v3 Building Design & Construction: New Construction (BD+C: NC) Gold certification. The Community Services Center consists of three main zones: an instructional zone with a lecture hall, computer lab, and teaching spaces; an activity zone with a gymnastics center and multipurpose rooms geared toward health and wellness activities; and an administrative zone with community programs, support spaces, and offices. The project site includes an athletics events plaza, a football practice field, and a parking lot.

The project site is a remediated brownfield that exemplifies sustainability and resilience by managing and treating stormwater on-site, implementing a light-colored roof and hardscape with high solar reflectance values, and providing 100% vegetated open space greater than the building footprint. Additionally, the building is located near many public amenities and public transportation options, which promotes walkability and connectivity. LAVC CSC also boasts high-performing building systems, achieving an overall 43% reduction in potable water use and a 34.05% energy cost savings compared to the LEED baseline. On top of these energy efficiency measures, the project offsets 15.39% of its total energy costs through on-site renewable energy systems. Healthy materials were also specified to promote occupant health and well-being, and the project impressively achieved the LEED Low-Emitting Materials credits in all four product categories.
