Green Building Advisor Talks DOE Net Zero Definition with Drew Shula

Verdical Group’s Founder & CEO, Drew Shula, was recently interviewed by Justin R. Wolf for a Green Building Advisor story on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s new definition of ‘zero emissions buildings.’

Shula spoke about the importance of having a consistent definition approved by the organization, which had left local governments and/or certification systems to determine their own definitions prior to this. According to the DOE, addendums are in progress to provide additional information.

“The definition will create resiliency in our cities, with each building able to operate independently of a larger power grid that’s typically monopolized by utilities and susceptible to failures and blackouts,” said Shula, noting that the inclusion of offsite renewables for the time being will improve adoption and energy security.
